Canadian Winter Tested: Getting Your Nissan Ready for Lethbridge Roads
Whether your day involves the school run in Lethbridge, a commute from Coaldale or a weekend away, winter preparation deserves a place on your October checklist. Choosing the right vehicle is one part of the picture. Tires, maintenance and knowing your vehicles features matter, too.
Nissan Canadas Project North offers an interesting look at how the brand evaluates vehicles in Canadian conditions and a useful starting point for getting ready for the colder months.
What is Nissan Project North?
Project North is Nissans Canadian winter-validation program. Much of the work takes place in Quebec, with additional testing of select models in locations including Calgary, Edmonton, Timmins and Winnipeg.
According to Nissan Canada, the program includes driving exercises covering up to 20,000 kilometres in temperatures below -20°C. Engineers assess how selected vehicles perform in conditions involving deep cold, blowing snow and winter road materials such as salt, sand and gravel.
That is useful context when researching a Nissan for Canadian ownership. It also highlights why winter readiness involves more than a feature on a specification sheet.
Start with your tires
Before concentrating on comfort features, take a look at what connects your vehicle to the road.
Transport Canada explains that all-season and summer tires begin losing elasticity below 7°C. Winter tires are designed to remain flexible at lower temperatures, helping maintain grip in cold conditions.
Transport Canada recommends installing winter tires in sets of four. Have your tire size, condition and suitability checked for your specific vehicle, and check pressures when the tires are cold using the recommended settings on the vehicles tire-information label.
Already have winter tires stored away? Arrange a tread-depth and condition check before installation. Planning ahead gives you time to discuss replacement options if your existing set is approaching the end of its useful winter life.
Get familiar with your Nissan's features
Equipment varies by model year and trim, so check the exact vehicle you own or are considering. Ask for a demonstration of its available drive modes, defrost controls, heated mirrors and other cold-weather features.
Nissan Canada provides model-specific owners manuals and links to its official how-to videos. These are helpful resources for learning how a feature operates and understanding its limitations before you need it on a cold morning.
Give your vehicle an autumn checkup
Transport Canada recommends checking items including the battery and charging system, brakes, lights, coolant, heater, defroster and windshield wipers. Winter-rated washer fluid belongs on the list as well.
Before driving, clear snow and ice from the vehicle, adjust your speed to conditions and leave additional following distance. A well-prepared vehicle still needs a driver who gives changing road conditions the attention they deserve.
